PhD Review
The PhD Program in Physics is a project that began to take shape in 1993 when the current Faculty of Science was formed.
Formally, the creation of the program started in mid-1994, strongly promoted by the Dean of that time. Intense efforts, between 1994-1995, led to the creation of internal rules and, generally speaking, all the necessary regulations for the operation of the Doctoral Program were established. In the next step, the project was submitted for consultation within the Council of the Department of Physics and within the Faculty of Science. The Program was finally approved by the decision-making bodies of the University in 1995, with the first class of students entering in 1995. After 5 years of operation, the Program was accredited for the first time by CONAP in October 2000 for two years. Then, a new accreditation for four years was received in August 2003. In 2008 the Program was presented again for evaluation and accredited by the CNAP in January 2010 for nine years, which was further on extended until 2028 after the last accreditation process in 2019.
As already mentioned, the first generation of students entered the Program in the second semester of 1995, and five doctors graduated from it between 1999 and 2000. Throughout the history of the program, as of August 2021, 58 doctors have graduated, all of them inserted in different institutions both in the public and private spheres. Many of them hold relevant positions in national and international academic institutions and the majority carry out systematic scientific work and are involved in the training of new scientists.
