Research Lines:

Earth and Space Sciences

Activity:

Strategic development of space sciences in the Physics Department of the University of Santiago de Chile.

The project to be developed at the University corresponds to a mixture of research in space plasma physics and development of predictive models of space weather. In this way, my insertion in the Physics Department opens a line of research in inner terrestrial magnetosphere, mainly dynamics of the radiation rings, and interactions between the solar wind and the terrestrial magnetosphere. Additionally, the project contemplates a more applied line of space weather modeling and prediction using data science with both predictive and risk assessment objectives.

Another of my objectives is to explore the processes of relativistic electron loss in the Van Allen radiation rings, and to identify the geomagnetic conditions and physical processes favorable for such losses. These studies will be complemented by the development of empirical models of relativistic electron fluxes using data science, utilizing the large availability of existing data.

Finally, the project contemplates the development of an earth magnetic field monitoring system to complement the SAMBA magnetometer network currently existing in the country, in order to evaluate the technical feasibility of using small, low-cost instruments for large-scale scientific studies.
